Mr. James "Carl" Carter, 89, of Hoover, AL passed away on June 13, 2020. He was born on a farm on February 14, 1931 in Pierce County, Georgia where his family were tenant farmers. After high school, Carl became the manager of the Lyric Theater in Waycross, GA. It was there that he met the love of his life, Gail Handley. Shortly after, they married and recently celebrated 67 years as husband and wife.
After serving his country in the Navy, Carl and Gail moved to Atlanta where he earned an AS in Electronics from Southern Tech. Upon graduation, Carl was recruited by General Electric to one of their facilities in Pinellas County, FL where he worked for over 25 years and was instrumental in developing several patented devices used by the Department of Energy.
Carl and Gail lived in Clearwater, FL for almost 60 years and while there, raised four boys. He attended First Baptist Church, Largo FL, coached all four sons in the local little league, and enjoyed gardening and fishing. In their retirement years, Carl and Gail enjoyed traveling across the country and planning for family events with their sons and daughters-in law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In late 2017, they moved to Hoover, AL where Gail still resides
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Hobson and Mamie Carter; brothers, David "DJ", Bennie, Loren, and Bobby; and sisters, Louise and Athylene.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gail Carter; sons, Steve (Debby), Rus (Nancy), Neal (Lynette), and Paul (Marti); grandchildren, Erin Cole (Jason) and Jacob (Lynn), Matt (Kelly), Jonathan, Ben (Nicole), Katie (Jonathan), Stephanie, and Caleb, great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Noah, Faith, Ailey, Maddie Joy, and Rylee; brother, Donnie; sister, Genevieve; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at 11:00am at Shades Mountain Baptist Church at 2017 Columbiana Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216. A private graveside service will be held for the family at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover, AL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bible Baptist Church Mission Fund at 280 Riviera Road, Palm Harbor, FL.
