James Lloyd Thornton, Jr., of Hoover, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018, at the age of 96. He was employed with and retired after 40 years from Western Grain Company. Following this, he worked as a security guard for Jim Dandy. Mr. Thornton was a long time member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Most significant, he was a passionate Alabama Football fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Beatrice Steely Thornton; parents, Alice Bowden Rogers and James Lloyd Thornton, Sr.; sister, Nina Strickland; and son, James William Thornton. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Ann Melton (Tommy), Linda Thornton, Betty Thornton, and Helen Thornton; grandchildren, Deborah Melton McTague (Robert), Tom Melton (Brandi), Will Ruzic (Molly), Chris Ruzic (Allison), Blaz Ruzic (Andrea), Dylan Nooney, and Chris Nooney; 13 great grandchildren; and half-brother, James Luke Thornton and his children, Matt Thornton and Sarah Mims (Lonnie).
The family will receive friends from 1-2, Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South, Pastor Danny Woods officiating.
