of Bessemer passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at the age of 82. He was a metallurgist for US Steel, an avid gardener, specializing in wildflowers, and a member of the Alabama Dahlia Society. Mr. Piper was a member of Canaan Baptist Church for over 50 years, and served in the pre-school department for over 30 years. He served in the Army Air Corps at the end of World War II and was a graduate of Fairfield High School and Howard College (Samford University). He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eloise S. Piper; two daughters, Jane Piper Clendinning and Jeanna M. Piper, M.D., one son, James C. Piper III; one granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Clendinning; three sisters, Jean Fulton, Joyce Walker (Robert), and Jackie Shelton. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 20, 2008 from 1-2:30 pm at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Highway 150, Hoover. Graveside service will follow.
