James R. McCarthy, of Hoover, Alabama passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 6, 2010 - he was 81 years old. Mr. McCarthy was born in Cleveland, Ohio, February 28, 1929, the only child of the late Anthony and Gertrude Kearns McCarthy. The family moved to Wilmington, DE in 1935, where Mr. McCarthy attended Alexis I. DuPont High School. After graduating, he served four years in the United States Marine Corp and then attended the University of Delaware, receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at the University, he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity and was elected to Tau Beta Phi honorary engineering society. He was also a graduate of Harvard's Advanced Management Program. Mr. McCarthy joined United States Steel Corporation after graduation accepting many moves and promotions in his 31 year career. He moved from Sewickley, PA, to Birmingham in 1978, after working in the company's home office in Pittsburgh. He retired here as General Manager Sales, Southern Division, in 1986. He was involved with many business and civic groups throughout his career and was an active member of New Horizons and Friends of Hoover. He was also a volunteer income tax preparer with AARP for several years. Mr. McCarthy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Deemie McCarthy; sons Kevin James McCarthy (and wife Deborah) of Lancaster, PA; Keith Robert McCarthy (and wife Meredith) of Houston, TX; and daughter Kimberly McCarthy Dimeo (and husband Bradford) of Barrington, RI. Also surviving Mr. McCarthy are his five grandchildren Patrick Kevin McCarthy & Eric Irvin McCarthy of Lancaster, PA; Robert Cragin McCarthy & William Ingram McCarthy of Houston, TX; and Blakely Sanderson Dimeo of Barrington, RI. There will be a memorial service for Mr. McCarthy at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens at 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, AL on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
