James H. "Jim" Dorough, of Homewood, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017, at the age of 92. He was born and raised in Cordele, GA. Mr. Dorough graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology where he was an honorable mention All American football player. He served his country in the USMC during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Dorough retired from Southern Natural Gas Company after almost 4 decades of service as a civil engineer. He was an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church for more than 60 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Joan Dorough; and his brother, Billy Dorough; and his granddaughter, Ann Noble Carlton. He is survived by 3 sons, James H. "Jimmy" Dorough, Jr. (Mary Lee), David Dorough (Lynn), and John Dorough (Mary); 2 daughters, Bonnie Alvord (Bob) and Melanie Williams (David); 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Marjorie Claire Dowdy and Eula Faye Culverhouse; and a brother, Kermit Dorough (Le).
The family will receive friends from 11-12:30, Monday, February 20, 2017, at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Funeral will follow at 12:30. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dawson Memorial Baptist Church or the Homewood City Schools Foundation.
