Jacob Lewis

Mr. Jacob Arnold Lewis, age 102, of Tuscaloosa, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Mr. Lewis was born on July 17, 1912, in Bibb County to G.W. and Bama McElroy Lewis. He spent his childhood in Virginia Mines, though he lived much of his adult life in Hueytown, AL. He enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Utah from 1933 to 1937. Mr. Lewis was a charter member and a founder of North Highlands Baptist Church in Hueytown where he remained a member and supporter until his death. He was employed by Long Lewis Hardware in Bessemer and Birmingham and retired after 63 years of service. Mr. Lewis was a Mason and a member of Bessemer and Birmingham Lodges. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and took great pleasure in his many hunting trips to the western United States. He was a lifelong University of Alabama football fan and enjoyed cheering for them each season. He lived 12 years at Pine Valley Retirement Community in Tuscaloosa where he took pride in being a helpmate to friends he made there and then moved to Glen Haven Nursing Home.
Mr. Lewis is preceded in death by his parents; wives, Helen Bell Lewis and June Lewis Short; brothers, Jewel Lewis and G.W. Lewis, Jr.; sisters, Lucille Shoemaker, Louise Nabors and Olene Jones; and stepdaughter, Tommie Myers.
He is survived by sons, Dale and Carol Lewis of Oneonta and Lanny and Karen Lewis of Pleasant Grove; stepson-in-law, Tom and Sharon Myers of Tuscaloosa; and stepdaughter, Sherry and Terry Dickerson of Bessemer. Surviving grandchildren are Renae (Bud ) Patterson, Delia Lewis, Whitney Rother, Ginger (Brady) Lovett, Chris Dickerson, Melissa (Josh) Nippert, and Meagan (Elliott) Davis. Surviving great-grandchildren are Farley Grace and Sloane Delaine Rother, Ethan Lovett and Mary Katherine Nippert. Surviving nieces and nephews are Gay and Dude Lindsey, Perry Jones, Bob and Evelyn Nabors, Mike and Linda Nabors, Phillip Nabors and Roger and Debbie Lewis.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 26, 2014, from 10-11 AM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home with service following at 11 AM with Rev. Doug O’Brien officiating. Interment will in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
