Howard Kelley Rose of Hoover, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at the age of 84.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Morris Rose, his parents Roseanna and Howard Rose, and sisters Marjorie Lowe and Otho Self. He is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Brakefield and Diane Keener (Jason), grandson James Brakefield, and many nieces and nephews.
Howard was born in Athens, Tennessee, and graduated from McMinn County High School in 1958. Shortly after, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he began his long career as a small engine mechanic and service manager for several businesses in the Birmingham area and, for a few years, in Pensacola, Florida.
Howard was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who always put his family’s needs above his own. A man of strong faith, he was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. He was a hard worker and was well respected by all who knew him, both professionally and personally. Howard had a brilliant mind for fixing things and was always the first person people turned to when something needed repair. He was wise and always ready to listen and offer thoughtful advice, all while having an amazing sense of humor and an infectious laugh.
He was an avid reader who was especially fond of history, particularly the World War II era. He loved all animals and took care of numerous pets over the years, plus many outdoor strays. Howard enjoyed photography, cooking, and building things. He often spent time watching football, classic movies, and British comedies. He liked to stay busy, and you could often find him working in his yard on Saturdays.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 9, 2024, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the chapel at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, in Hoover, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m.
If you wish to make a donation in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care. Howard’s family would like to express their appreciation to everyone there for the compassionate care he received during his final days.
