Herschel Smith

Mr. Herschel David Smith, 71, of Hoover, AL, went to be with the Lord on March 26, 2014. David was preceded in death by his father, Herschel Claudius Smith and his mother, Fay Robertson Smith. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Colette Heaton Smith, Colette’s family whom he regarded as his family, and several cousins. David loved his family very much.
David grew up in Vernon, AL. He attended undergraduate and law school at the University of Alabama. He was a life-long loyal Alabama fan.
David retired Internal Revenue Service in December 1999 after a 30 year career as an estate and gift tax attorney. He was an outdoorsman and he had an extensive Indian arrowhead collection that he found on farms in Lamar County. He and Colette’s grandfather were great fishing buddies and they enjoyed many fishing trips together.
David was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church. He was home-bound for the last six years due to health problems but his Christian faith remained strong and he was an inspiration to everyone.
Visitation will be Friday, March 28, 2014, from 1PM until service time at 2 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, AL. Burial will be in Vernon City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
