Mrs. Helen Lydia Icard Burgess, age 92, was born in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada. She was a lifelong resident of Mobile and passed away in Birmingham on Thursday, June 27, 2013. She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. After working many years for Alabama Power in Mobile, she retired in 1988 from Providence Hospital. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Pius X Catholic School, working crossword puzzles, playing cards and board games, and was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert E. Burgess, Jr., her parents, Lydia Rose Icard Trippe and Leopold Benjamin Icard, and her stepfather, Charles Calvin Trippe, one sister, Jeanne Icard Willis, and one brother, Charles Edmond Trippe. She is survived by her son, Robert E. Burgess, III (Jean) and daughter, Barbara B. O'Brien (John) of Centerville, OH: two grandchildren, Robert E. Burgess, IV and Rachel Lauren O'Brien; two sisters, Emma Icard Wells of Alexandria, LA, and Betty Rose Fountain of Irvington, AL, and a brother, Paul Leo Icard of Mobile, AL. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM, Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church on Hwy 119 in Birmingham. A Mass of Christian burial will follow in the church at 11:00 AM. Entombment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Our Lady of the Valley Church in her memory.
