Hadden Bass Smith III, died on October 6, 2022 in Birmingham, AL. He was born March 27, 1947, in Galveston, TX, the son of Hadden Bass Smith Jr. and Inez Thompson Smith.
Hadden graduated from Livingston High School and joined the US Navy. He served on the USS Bennington during the Vietnam War. After serving in the Navy, he attended Livingston University and later Auburn University. He met Karen KeracherSmith in 1969 and they were married soon after. Theyeventually settled in Birmingham, AL where they raised their three children, Hadden, Kerstin, and Jessica. They celebrated 52 years of marriage in August 2022.
Hadden was a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and elder at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. He loved his church family and loved telling others about Jesus even during his final days. He was a loving PawPaw and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He loved Auburn University, especially Auburn football. He never met a stranger and always had a smile and a joke for those that he met. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Betty Smith Neel and his brother Dave Callahan. Hadden is survived by his wife, Karen Keracher Smith, son Hadden BassSmith IV (Jennifer), daughter Kerstin Smith Lynch, daughter Jessica Smith Crain (Matt), his grandchildren Hadden Bass Smith V and Katelyn Cooper Smith. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law David Neel and Mike Keracher (Jan) along with his nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
There will be a graveside service at the Alabama National Cemetery at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12. Please arrive a few minutes prior. This service will be followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 in the Worship Center at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Briarwood Christian School Fine Arts Department.
