Gloria Jones

May 29, 1931 — December 25, 2023

Gloria Ann Jones died peacefully on December 25, 2023 having been surrounded by her loving family for the last week of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Gordon C. Jones, her mother, Ruby Gray Wesson, and her father, John Oliver Wesson. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Gloria was born on May 29, 1931 and grew up in the Minor area of Jefferson County. She graduated from Minor High School in 1949, and shortly thereafter she was set up on a blind date with Gordon Jones, a young sailor from Wylam home on leave during his first Navy stint, thus beginning a fairy tale romance that only dreams are made of. They went out on Wednesday; he asked her to marry him on Sunday, and they were married just two weeks later. Their marriage lasted 70 years, 3 months and 29 days until he died in 2019 as she held his hand.

Gloria had a fun loving and vibrant personality that endeared her to everyone she met, including the young folks who were friends with her children, Doug and Terrie. The Jones house in Fairfield was always the center of activity where everyone was welcome, no matter when or what time - and Gloria was always the life of the party. While she loved dancing and music by Elvis, Gloria was passionate about Alabama football, in recent years often calling in to the Paul Finebaum Show to set him straight about the previous Saturday's game. But most of all, Gloria was devoted to her family. The happiest days in her life were the ones where she first held her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Gloria is survived by her son Doug Jones (Louise), daughter Terrie Savage (Scott), granddaughter Courtney Andrews (Rip), grandsons Carson Jones and Christopher Jones, step-granddaughter Jessica Savage, great-granddaughters Ever and Ollie Andrews and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Gloria's family will receive visitors from 12:00pm to 1:30pm on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home (2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Alabama, 35244). A service will be held in The Chapel at 1:30 followed by a graveside service at Valhalla Cemetery.

For those family and friends who wish to make a charitable contribution in lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorials can be made to the charity of one's choice. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the caregivers and staff at Woodside Assisted Living at St. Martin's in the Pines and her long-time physician Dr. Henry Frohsin and his staff for the comfort and kindness they gave to her over the years and especially during this difficult time.
