Gladys Moor

December 10, 1931 — March 14, 2015

Mrs. Gladys Lusk Moor, 83 of Birmingham, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton J. Moor, her brother, Alton Lusk and son-in-law, Allen T. Arthur Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Holly A. Smith (Stuart Kirby) of Birmingham; two sons, Wayne J. Moor (Marta) of West Palm Beach, FL and Karl R. Moor (Judith) of Birmingham; her grandchildren, Bryan, Ashley, Jennifer, Michael, Michelle, Alex, Virginia, Courtney, Samantha, Sophia, and Eva, seven great grandchildren; her brother, Bobby Bruce Lusk of Boaz and a sister Diane Lusk of Winfield.
Mrs. Moor was born in Scottsboro, Alabama and raised on nearby Cumberland Mountain as a part of the extended Washburn family. She and her immediate family spent a portion of the war years in Birmingham. After the war, she met and married Clifton J. Moor, together they reared a family at U.S. bases in the United States, Asia and Africa, while Mr. Moor served first in the United States Navy and then in the United Sates Air Force. During Mr. Moor’s service in Vietnam between 1965-66, Mrs. Moor returned briefly to live in Birmingham but only returned permanently to the city after the end of her husband’s military career. She was an active volunteer at base hospitals and schools and had a lifelong gift for forging a wide range of friends across all walks of life through her humor, directness and gentleness. She was particularly giving and gracious with those in need or hurting.
Mrs. Moor was an active member of the seniors group at Mountain Top Community Church before moving to Somerby at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. She and her husband were founding members of both Ridgecrest Baptist Church (Center Point) in 1956 and of Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church congregation (Birmingham) in the 1980’s. She was a lifelong supporter of and friend to Israel. Although physically disabled, she made a special effort to visit that nation in the spring of 2003 during the midst of Second Intifada.
Mrs. Moor’s family wish to thank Dr. Paul Roller and his professional team, the staffs of both Brookdale Place University Park and New Beacon Hospice for their loving care and concern for Mrs. Moor in the final months and days of her life.
In keeping with her wishes, a private service will be held for her family and friends who have become family, as she said, “I took you children all over the world, now just quietly get me home and to your father and to my heavenly Father.”
