On the evening of July 27, 2021, Gerney D. Mitchell of Bluff Park and Hoover, Alabama died on his birthday at the age of 100. Mr. Mitchell was born to Jesse and Ethel Mitchell in Ensley, Alabama in 1921. He served proudly and with honor in the U.S. Navy during both WWII and the Korean Conflict and four additional years in the Naval Reserve. A career as an Instrument Engineer with U.S. Steel Corp., interrupted only by his military service, began in 1938 and was completed 45-years later in 1983.
Always active in his community in his younger years, Mr. Mitchell served on the Bluff Park Arts Council, volunteered with the Bluff Park Volunteer Fire Dept., spent years working at both Shades Crest Baptist and Green Valley Baptist churches, worked the front desk at the Hoover Rec Center, was a member of numerous engineering and ham-radio clubs, and dozens of other groups and projects that fascinated him.
Mr. Mitchell is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Jewell, his brother, James, his wife, Louise McClain Mitchell, and his grandson, Jason Lundy. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda A. Mitchell, two sons, Don Mitchell and his wife, Vilma, and David Mitchell, two step-sons, Don and Reid Lundy and their wives, Candye and Carrie Lundy, respectively, and a granddaughter, Katelyn Mitchell.
Burial will be Friday morning at Alabama National Cemetery in a small, private ceremony.
