Gerald Vaughn

April 21, 1931 — January 23, 2022

Lake View

We celebrate the life of Gerald Webster Vaughn, who “went home” to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 23, 2022, at 90 years and 9 months of age. He talked about Bible stories and how he was ready to see Jesus. He went peaceably in his sleep 2 days after saying, “I want to go home”. Gerald was born in Blount County, Alabama, on April 21, 1931. Growing up as a country boy with 10 siblings and no father at home, he knew what hard work was. That hard work ethic was what he was known for throughout his life. Even with his sight almost gone, he didn’t stop cutting his grass until he was 89 years old. He served as a corporal two years in the army; 13 months were in the Korean war. Having spent so much time in a tent in the rain & mud, he never again liked hunting or camping. Coming home, he was stationed in Texas for a short while before returning to Alabama. He then took his wife, Johnnie Wahl, to Detroit, Michigan to work in a printing press. That is where his son Jerry was born. He soon returned to Alabama, where his daughter Karen was born, and began working in the steel industry, ending up at US Pipe, where he worked for 32 years before retiring. This job caused him to develop problems in his lungs, but throughout the remaining years of his life, with the Lord’s grace, he overcame several serious illnesses. His last 30 years were spent in the home they built in Lake View, Alabama. Gerald was also known for his love of working in his yard – his one and only hobby. He spent most of his time there. The daily hours he and Johnnie, his wife of 68 years, invested resulted in one of the most beautiful yards in the area. They truly prided themselves in this. Yet, their greatest joy was having time with their 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. When they were in the house, a mess of toys in the floor was welcomed. His love and pride for each of them was very obvious. It was touching to see how they made him laugh.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Johnnie Wahl Vaughn, of Lake View, Alabama, his son, Jerry Vaughn, and daughter-in-law, Teresa, of Claremore, OK, his daughter, Karen Vaughn, of Pinson, AL, his grandsons, Daniel Jones & wife Shelly, of Lake View, AL, Eric Davis & wife Michelle of, Lincoln, AL, Joshua Vaughn & wife Sarah, of Claremore, Ok, and granddaughter, Elishya Cook & husband Jonathan, of Owasso, OK, as well as his great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kaleb, Isabella, Leilani, Joshua, Sophie, William, Jude, Jennavieve, Avah, Carlie, and Aubrey. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Mary Vaughn of AL, Mavis Carmichael of FL, and Carol Harris of TN.

A viewing will be held, Thursday, January 27, 2022, from 5-7 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, January 28, 2022, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, Al. The funeral will be conducted by his son, Pastor Gerald (Jerry) Vaughn. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover.
