George Dennis Yawn, known to many family members, especially his grandchildren, as “D”, age 83, passed away peacefully at 4:40AM on December 13, 2011. He was born November 22, 1928, in Collins, Mississippi and was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Minnie Yawn, and his eldest son Timothy Dennis Yawn. Dennis is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Morrow Yawn, daughters Gail Yawn Benson (Eric) of Pensacola, Florida; Laura Lorraine Steele (Donald), of Pelham, Alabama; son Russell Yawn (Angie) of Helena; grandchildren Lauren Benson, Jordan Benson, Erin Benson, Logan Benson, Landon Benson, Peyton Benson; Madison Steele, Sam Steele, Molly Steele, Macy Steele; Noah Dennis Yawn and Ella Yawn. Dennis Yawn served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. After serving his country, Dennis worked for Plantation Pipeline, Jim Walters Resources and as the manager of the Utility Board for the City of Helena until he retired after 17 years of service to the people of Helena. Dennis was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Helena, serving in a number of different positions including treasurer and deacon. Dennis Yawn’s family will receive friends and loved ones at the Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Highway 150/John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Alabama, from 5:00-7:00PM on Thursday, December 15, 2011. His service will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Helena, 815 Hwy 52 East, Helena, Alabama, with visitation from 1:00-2:00PM with the celebration of his life following immediately afterward with Reverend Greg Walker officiating. Interment will be at the Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South concluding the service. His pallbearers, all of his six grandsons, will carry him to his resting place. The family of Dennis Yawn wants him to be recognized for how he lived. His first love was his Lord. Second, his dedication and commitment to his wife, his children and his grandchildren was unwavering. He will be remembered for his character, integrity, unique sense of humor, his ready smile, and his inability to say no to anyone in need. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the First Baptist Church of Helena, 815 Hwy 52 East, Helena, Alabama, 35080.
