George Dabney McGaughy, 85, of Homewood, Alabama passed away on January 8, 2025. George, or Dabney, to those closest to him, was born on November 10, 1939. He grew up in Homewood, Alabama and attended Shades Valley High School. He loved his country and joined the Alabama National Guard, 156 MP Battalion. He completed his basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Military Police School at Fort Gordon, Georgia. In 1958 he applied for active duty and was stationed at Fort Chaffee Arkansas. In September 1958 he was assigned to the 534 Military Police Co, in Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone.
While stationed in Panama, He met the love of his life on a blind date and married his beautiful wife, Nury, on January 30, 1960. From that moment she was the center of his world and the light in his eye. The two were inseparable ... married over 65 years and absolutely made for each other. They welcomed two of their three daughters, Diane and Judy, while living in the Canal Zone. In 1962, the family moved to the States when Dabney was assigned to US Army MP and Second, Company Fort Richie, Maryland from 1962-1964. Dabney and Nury moved their family once again to Birmingham in 1964 when he joined the 3345 US Army Reserve Hospital as a full-time employee and later assigned to Company A 926 Engineer as a fulltime Technician. In 1973, they welcomed their third daughter, Susy. In 1975, he was assigned to Headquarter 121 Army Reserve Command (ARCOM) as Logistic Management Technician.
In 1979 he returned to active duty and was appointed Warrant Officer Two and assigned to Logistic Section 121 ARCOM. In 1984 he was assigned to 87 Maneuver Area Command and was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer Three. In 1987 he was reassigned to Headquarter 121 ARCOM and promoted to Chief Warrant Officer Four until his retirement from active duty. After retirement, he missed his uniform and soon began serving as a bailiff for the Jefferson County Court House.
As successful as he was professionally, his true passion was his family. Dab was the solid-rock foundation of his family. A loving husband, father, Papa and great-grandfather. He was always positive, always supportive, always ready ... always there for anyone who needed his help. He was always watching out for us and rooting for us and wanting the best things for us. He was our steady anchor. He made sure we all knew he would be there as soon as he could be to help so we wouldn't have to go through anything alone. He set the example for how to love deeply with all of his heart and in return we all loved him so very much.
Dabney was a man who could make anything, fix anything, cook anything, do anything. He was a skilled artist and painted beautiful pictures of boats and lighthouses and farms. He built rooms onto his own house by himself and constructed most of the moss rock fireplaces down Atkins Trimm Boulevard. He could do anything he put his mind to.
Dab was an expert at assigning random nicknames to his family members and his pets. He was a versed practical joker and an extremely positive and joyous person. His number one hobby was his trains. He made beautiful tiny little towns and everyone in our family had a special place in
his basement train village. He was also a card-carrying ,Tide Pride member who loved his Crimson Tide Football all of his days. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.
He is proceeded in death by his parents George W. McGaughy of Montevallo, AL and Martha Dabney Walker of Homewood, AL; and granddaughter Sheena Ayers, of Homewood, AL.
He is survived by: his beloved wife Nury; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Roger Appell, Judy and Jeff Nysewander, Susy and Mike Daria; grandchildren, Alex and Chase McCain, Shea and Miller Allan, Michael and Alexandra Nysewander, Nicholas Daria, Tyler Daria; and great-grandchildren: Sophia and Charlie McCain, Hayes Allan, and Nicholas and Isabella Nysewander; brother, Sam McGaughy and sister, Liz Bradford, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He was larger than life, all his life, and now he has traded this life for all the rewards that we know he will have in heaven. He has been welcomed by all of our loved ones who passed before him, and we know he'll be waiting for us at the gates when it's our time to join him. Matthew 25:23 His Lord said to Him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord."
