George Adkins

September 22, 1936 — January 18, 2025

George Adkins went home to be with Jesus on January 18, 2025. He was 88 years old.

On September 22, 1936, George was born to George and Lillian Adkins in Birmingham Alabama. He was the oldest of 3 with a sister Katherine, and a brother, Gene. He attended Tarrant High School where he was an outstanding basketball player. After high school joined the IBEW and trained to become an electrician. He married the former Faye Kelso on June 2, 1962. In 1975, with no formal business training, he opened Adkins Electrical Service and successfully operated it until 1994. After enduring quadruple bypass surgery, he retired from that business. Not being one to sit around he promptly started Buy George Auto Sales in Hueytown Alabama. He successfully operated it until deciding to sell it and retire permanently in 2016. During his life he also owned 2 restaurants. He was an exceptionally good businessman and negotiator despite having to learn everything the hard way.

George became interested in show horses and for several years bread, trained and competed with racking horses, even winning a world championship. He loved Alabama football; he and Faye attended many games over the years with a group of close friends. Probably the only thing he was more passionate about were cars, and Pontiac GTOs were his absolute favorite. Over the years he owned too many to count. He kept every car immaculately clean and in perfect condition.

George was a relentless hard worker, dependable and tough but also compassionate and caring. He held himself to a high standard in everything, even the way he dressed. He loved to get dressed up for any event but especially church. He and Faye were members of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church for several years where he actively participated and supported the ministry. He loved the Lord and is with Him now.

Most of all he loved his family and leaves behind (for now) his wife Faye Adkins, son Ricky Adkins Brady & wife Ezsma, daughter Cindy Adkins Sumter, son Kerry Adkins & wife Carol Adkins, son Scott Adkins & wife Tammy Adkins; grandchildren Gabriel Adkins, Tyler Brady, Bradley Sumter and Christian Kyser; great grandchildren Brodie Kyser, Brianna Kyser, Piper Brady, Camden Ward and Sophia Sumter.

George will be deeply missed by family, friends, church members and neighbors. He was always willing to help, and the world is a better place because of his life.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me-the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing."

2 Timothy 4:7-8
