Gene Shanks

SHANKS, OSCAR EUGENE "GENE",of Hoover, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the age of 83. He was a US Army Air Corp veteran of WWII where he was a B-24 ball turret gunner based in Italy. His plane was shot down over Germany and he interned in Switzerland. Mr. Shanks graduated from George Washington University after the war. He retired after 45 years service from the Central Intelligence Agency.He was a loving husband, father and "Da Da" to his grandchildren. He is survivied by his spouse of 50 years, Marjorie Shanks, of Hoover; a son, David Shanks (Cari) of Cleveland, TN; two daughters, Ellen Padgett (Mike) and Barbara Spink (John) both of Birmingham, AL; three grandchildren, Stephen and Katie Jean Spink,of Birmingham, AL and Sam Shanks of Cleveland, TN; two brothers, William Shanks (Lois) of Warrenton, VA and Ellis Shanks (JoAnn) of Miami, FL; a sister, Jane Stephenson of Seattle, WA. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 from 10-11 am at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150, Hoover. Funeral service will follow at 11 am in the funeral home chapel.
