Fred Guy

March 16, 1934 — August 13, 2021

Birmingham, AL

Fred Guy, 87 of Helena, Alabama passed away on August 13, 2021. Fred was born in Springville, Alabama in 1934. He grew up in Springville during hard times with little money, but learned how to be tough and a hard worker while helping his father work in the coal mines from a young age. His family later moved to the Bessemer area when Fred was a teenager and that's when he met Wilma, the love of his life. They were soon married and started a family together as he continued to be the hard working provider for Wilma and their five children. In addition to the mines, he tried out his hand at building rail cars at Pullman. Shortly thereafter, he found his ultimate passion for truck driving and so he hit the road. Fred drove a truck for over fifty years and even took his wife Wilma, along for the ride for a few of them. He really enjoyed driving his big rig, but he absolutely loved his wife most of all. He was a loving and devoted husband, who never missed a chance to spend time with his true love, Wilma. She was the boss and took charge of everything, but he wouldn't have it any other way. She's probably the reason he stopped smoking when their children were growing up and stopped drinking when their grandchildren were born. He'd do anything for that woman!
Fred loved Western movies and TV shows and could watch them all day every day. He looked forward to every meal and had to have some kind of dessert afterwards, but ice cream was always his favorite. He had no filter on what he said, loved to laugh and was generous with his use of curse words. One rarely had a conversation with him without hearing a few GD's and Som' Bs, along with his boyish laughter. He enjoyed living out in the woods and sitting on his porch looking at the trees and admiring nature. He liked phone calls and visits from his loved ones, especially the little grandkids and great grandkids because he was just a big kid himself. He may have been strict and tough as a father, but the grandkids ultimately softened him up and made him be as sappy as those same trees he would stare at from his porch!
Fred always had something to say and had a presence with his big smile and laughter. He was always right, of course. His big personality will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Wilma; his children, Terry (Rhonda), Sammy,  Alesia McKenzie (Ron) and Annette Henson; grandchildren, Jim, Reggie, Jennifer, Brandy, David, Dewey, Chester, Sonja, Amanda, Wesley and Samantha; siblings, Lonnie Ray, Virginia White and Lenda White (Kenneth); as well as twenty-three great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Guy and Christine Murphree; daughter, Becky; and brother, Frank.
