Gene was born to Catherine and James Bayliss on March 2, 1946. He grew up in a close-knit community known as Fairfield Highlands, where he was lovingly referred to as "Bay Bay". This is where he attended Rutledge School from first grade through ninth grade. After finishing the ninth grade, he went to Fairfield High School and graduated in 1964. As a high school graduate, he was hired at American Cast Iron and Pipe Company. There he was awarded an apprenticeship and continued working there for fifteen years. He then was offered a position with Jim Walter Resources in Brookwood, Alabama. There he continued to utilize his third-generation machinist skills for the next twenty-nine years until he retired in 2009.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Catherine and James Bayliss, his sister, Mary Catherine Brown, her husband Don, brother, Jim Bayliss, and his wife Patsy. He is survived by his wife, Ronda Thrasher Bayliss, of Fifty-three years, his son, David Bayliss and wife Tracie, daughter, Meredith White her husband Taylor, and four grandchildren, Bayliss White, Tristan Bayliss, Mary Taylor White, and Tyler Bayliss, two nephews and several cousins.
He was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in June of 2018. He lived five good years after being diagnosed without pain, medication, or oxygen. He passed away peacefully at the age of seventy-seven on June 3, 2023.
Funeral services are to be held on June 7, 2023, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home and Memorial Cemetery, at the Hoover location. The Visitation Service is 12:00-1:00 PM with the Graveside Service following.
