Mr. Eschol “Matt” Mathews, Jr., age 62, passed away Monday, April 11, 2011, in Tuscaloosa, AL. Matt served his country proudly as a Sergeant, Regular Air Force in Vietnam receiving a Purple Heart. He retired from Jim Walter Mines after more than 20 years. Matt never met a stranger and also always had a story to tell. Matt was preceded in death by his father, Eschol T. Mathews, Sr., and mother, Nettie Mathews. He is survived by a sister, Mary Lou Webster, two sons, Clay Martin Mathews (Mary Katherine) and Kent Thomas Mathews (Mary Katherine), three grandchildren, Oliver, Eliza, and Mary Martin, two nephews, Robert P. Ezell, Jr., and Clark Mathews Ezell, a niece, Sheila Dawn Dial, and special friends, Lewis and Shirley Shirley and Dr. Cindy Dedmon. “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.” Graveside service will be Thursday, April 14, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115. Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. Condolences may be made online at www.curriejefferson.com.
