Elizabeth Berman

It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth Gertrude (Cannarella) Berman announces her passing after a yearlong battle with leukemia. Elizabeth passed away at her home in Birmingham, in the presence of her loving family.

Elizabeth was born on January 22, 1961 in Clifton, New Jersey, the daughter of Carmine and Mary Ellen Cannarella. She graduated from Rutgers University in 1982 and enjoyed a career in the business world. She married her beloved husband Peter in 1989, and they lived in North Jersey for ten years before moving to their current home in Birmingham.

Elizabeth was a courageous woman of strong faith, devoting much of her time and energy to her family and her church. She was an active member of her parish, St. Theresa Catholic Church, and committed herself to pro-life activities, religious education classes and poverty alleviation programs. She passed on to her family a legacy of love and the importance of living one’s faith.

Elizabeth touched many lives as wife, mother, godmother, sister and aunt. She was a devoted wife to her husband of 25 years, and a most loving mother to her surviving son, Matthew James, and her daughter Ashley Lynn, who predeceased her. She will be missed greatly by her sisters, Nanette and Maryanne, and brothers Joseph and John. She was a loving aunt to her nephews John and Jeffrey and her nieces Stefanie, Elizabeth, Allison, Jennifer, Maria and Lisette. Elizabeth will also be forever remembered by her aunt, her many cousins, extended family members and dear friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 1, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover. Funeral mass will be on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Leeds with Father Gray Bean officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover.

It is Elizabeth’s wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Holy Rosary Food Pantry.
