Edith Mae Preston, 96, passed away peacefully in her home on January 28, 2025. She was born on April 26, 1928, in Maylene, AL, to Lexie Kendrick and Lawrence Washington Kendrick. Her father was a World War I veteran and a dedicated mail carrier, while her mother was a devoted schoolteacher.
Edith graduated from Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) and began her career as a registered dietitian before transitioning into education, where she spent over 25 years as a beloved schoolteacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Lexie Kendrick and Lawrence Washington Kendrick), her husband (Chief Boatswain's Mate Alfred A. Preston, U.S. Navy) and her three siblings. (Ann Kendrick (Dawkins), Ruth Kendrick, and Captain Lawrence Washington Jr., U.S. Navy.)
Edith is survived by her son, Tony Preston (married to Cynthia Preston); her grandchildren, Senior Chief Petty Officer Rachel Lynn Preston, U.S. Navy and Jacob Preston; and her great-grandchildren, Isabella Preston, McKenna Thomas, Edie Rose Preston (her namesake), and Briggs Preston.
Family was the center of Edith's life, and she was deeply involved in the lives of her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She was always present with unwavering love and support. Her grandchildren were especially blessed to have her as a guiding force in their lives, instilling in them values of kindness, perseverance, and faith. She made sure they always knew they were loved beyond measure, and her influence will forever shape their lives.
For over 40 years, she was a devoted member of Helena United Methodist Church, where her faith and kindness were evident to all who knew her. She also had a deep love for her loyal dog, Oreo, who brought her joy for the past 17 years.
Edith was a beacon of joy and positivity, always uplifting those around her with her warmth and kindness. She touched countless lives, and her family and friends will forever be grateful for the impact she had on them. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love and light will live on.
