Dr. Edmund Peter Segner, Jr., P.E., 93, of Hoover , Alabama peacefully went to be with his Lord on February 28, 2022. Ed was a dedicated and honored engineering educator serving the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Memphis, the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, the University of Oklahoma and Texas A&M University. He was born on March 28, 1928 in Austin, Texas to Edmund and Elsie Grenwelge Segner. He is predeceased by his sister Mary Lucille Segner Thomas.
He married the love of his life, Martha Fairfax Smith Segner in 1952. In addition to his wife of 69 years, he is survived by his five children: Ed Segner ( Kathy ), John Segner, Nancy Segner Newcomb (Jeff), Sandra Segner Obrecht (Jim, deceased) and Sharon Segner. He delighted in having five grandchildren: Peter Segner, Nathan Newcomb, Tyler Newcomb, Sam Newcomb and Christian Segner ( Tori ). To date he also has one great granddaughter: Reese Segner.
He received engineering degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1949 and 1952 and was named in 2004 to the Academy of Distinguished Graduates, Department of Civil Engineering. He received a Ph.D in Structural Engineering from Texas A&M in 1962. He was named “ Engineer of the Year “ in 1997 by the Engineering Council of Birmingham. He served in the United States Air Force Reserves with the rank of Major.
In addition to his professional engineering and education activities, he actively served his church, Riverchase United Methodist Church in Hoover, the Greater Alabama Council of Boy Scouts and the Birmingham Kiwanis Club.
Ed loved his family, his country and the Lord with all of his heart. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 5th beginning at 1:00 to service time at 2:00 pm at Riverchase United Methodist Church. Burial services will be private following. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Riverchase United Methodist Church,1953 Old Montgomery Hwy., Hoover, AL 35244 or your favorite charity.
