SLATTON, DONALD RICHARD, of Hoover, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the age of 72. Mr. Slatton was a real estate developer and builder in the Birmingham area. He was inducted into the Home Builders Ass'n of Alabama Hall of Fame and Greater Birmingham Home Builders Hall of Fame, and was Birmingham's Builder of the Year for 2005. Mr. Slatton was a member and former President of the Hoover Parks and Recreation Board, Sr. VP of the National Ass'n of Home Builders, Exec. VP of the Apartment and Office Building Ass'n of Washington, DC, and Exec. VP of the Washington, DC Ass'n of Realtors. Mr. Slatton was responsible for raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the children of Big Oak Ranch. He was a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jeanette Slatton; two sons, Kevin Slatton (Tina) of Atlanta, and Jason Slatton of Birmingham; two grandchildren, Kelly-Anne and Jack Slatton; two brothers, Rev. Garnett Slatton (Michelle) of Bay Village, OH and Michael Kerley (Mary) of Pine Hall, NC; one sister, Kathryn Helms (David) of Winston-Salem, NC; and step-mother, Mary Covington of Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM, Friday, January 15, 2010 at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover. Funeral service will be 12:00 PM, Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the church chapel, Dr. Buddy Gray and Rev. Chris Sullivan officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Big Oak Ranch.
