Donald Oakley

Donald F. Oakley, of Bessemer, passed away Friday, November 18, 2016, at the age of 84 after a long battle with lung cancer. Donald spent 3 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and he graduated from the University of Alabama. He spent his working years in banking, having served as president of Henry County Bank. Mr. Oakley eventually retired as a vice president from AmSouth Bank. He and Nina loved to travel, and he enjoyed the fact that they were able to travel to all the 48 contiguous states, as well as Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands.

He is preceded in death by his wife of more than 55 years, Nina Johns Oakley; his parents, Walter F. Oakley, Jr. and Florrie Fields Oakley; a brother, Walter F. Oakley III; and his son-in-law, Mark McDowell. He is survived by a daughter, Gayle McDowell; 2 sisters, Eloise Waters and Nancilu Underwood (Wilbur); a step granddaughter, Jessica Franks (Jason); step great granddaughter, Danica Franks; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 3-5, Sunday, November 20, 2016, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to your favorite charity.
