Mr. David Shields Smith, 91, of Alabaster, AL passed away on March 28, 2021. David was born in Knoxville, TN on February 9, 1930. During his lifetime, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea. His career in sales included Territory Sales Manager for American Greetings Cards. He went on to purchase a franchise of gift stores from American Greetings with stores in Montgomery and Birmingham. He then established D.S. Smith Enterprises, a distributorship for greeting cards and Alabama postcards and souvenirs. On May 23, 1999 he married Dr. Myra Smith, the love of his life. He dedicated his retirement to writing inspirational poetry and songs. He published 3 books and 3 songs. He was an active, devoted member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He will be remembered with love by his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandson, David Tarpley; numerous siblings; parents, Marshall Lee Smith and Eula Goans Smith; and son-in-law, Bradford Tarpley.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Myra A. Smith; daughters, Janice Tarpley and Amy Alford (Rod); grandchildren, Daniel Tarpley, Rod Alford Jr., and Ryan Alford; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Tarpley, Mya Alford, Alexander Alford, and Andrew Alford.
A visitation will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 1, 2021 from 10:00am to 11:00am. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am with Dr. Reverend Kip Laxson officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover, AL.
