Cyrus Rice

Mr. Cyrus Norman Rice, age 73, died on December 3, 2012 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. A native of Arab, Alabama, Norman enjoyed a long career in education. He was graduated from Arab High School and Snead State Junior College. He also earned an undergraduate degree from Howard College, a master's degree from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate from the University of Alabama. Norman was predeceased by his parents, Doris Brock and Cyrus Russell Rice. He is survived by brother Benjamin Russell Rice (wife Sadie). He is also survived by his wife of 52 years, Julia Alice Granade Rice; two sons, James Norman Rice (wife Catherine), and Geoffrey Granade Rice (wife Kathryne). Grandchildren include Emily Kathryne Rice, 10; Jackson Russell Rice (4); Daniel Carson Powers (15) and Mary Stewart Powers (12). Visitation will begin at 9:30 am on Friday morning with the funeral service following at 10:30. Visitation and service will be held at Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Ave, Hoover, AL 35226. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery immediately thereafter, with Dr. James A. Auchmuty officiating. Pallbearers include Jimbo Auchmuty, Wayne Hogg, Sid McDonald, Scott Purkey, Chuck Williamson and Herb Winches. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Shades Crest Baptist Church building fund.
