Charles Scantland

April 8, 1927 — October 16, 2016

Charles Edwin Scantland entered through the great door of heaven into the Lord's Kingdom on Sunday the 16th of October, just before noon.

Born in Harrodsburg, Ky., the seventh of nine children, Charles grew up during the depression and war years, surrounded by beautiful farm country.

His dad the Reverend William Scantland and his mother Ida were always ready to share the Good News of Christ's love with the world around them. Through the years, his dad pastored several congregations in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Charles met the love of his life, Joyce Marie Murray, at a high school social in Bowling Green, Ky., where he announced from the stage mike, "Hey everybody, the girl I'm going to marry just walked in the door."

Just over two years later his dad married them in front of the family Christmas tree on December 21, 1946.

Charles served in the U.S. Navy for 2.5 years, and left the Navy five months before Charles Larry was born in May of 1948.

After the Navy and with the help of a beloved uncle Bill Underhill, Charles entered the machining profession in Nashville, Tn. He remained in this line of work through the 1950's and 60's and became a machine shop foreman for Nashville Machine.

During this time, 2 more children were added, Chris Edwin and Carol Marie. And he and Joyce were founding members of Crievewood Baptist in South Nashville.

From 1970 till 2005, he was in industrial sales in Bowling Green, Ky., Florence, Al., and in Gadsden, Al.

He served as a church greeter, deacon, and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Al.

From 2006 until recently he was a Walmart Greeter, who loved his job, because he was a people person. He was eager to help anyone.

His final days were shared with his family speaking prayers and words of love over him, singing spiritual hymns with him and to him, and praising him for the man of God that he was to his wife, to each of his children and grandchildren and to all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

His favorite scriptures were John 3:16, Romans 8:28 and Philippians 4:13.

He is preceeded in his passing by his dad Reverend William Scantland and his mother Ida Scantland; his siblings Frances Estes, Byron Scantland, Hazel Hampton, Thelma Blehar, Edna Keeling, Paul Scantland and David Scantland.

Those remaining are his wife, Joyce Scantland of Jacksonville, Al.; his sons, Larry Scantland of Louisville, Ky., and Chris Scantland of Jacksonville, Al., and his daughter, Carol Dodgen of Odenville, Al.; his grandchildren: Zachary Scantland and Rachel Beckman of Louisville, Ky., David Dodgen of Tuscaloosa, Al., Sarah Dodgen and Joshua Dodgen of Odenville, Al.; his greatgrandchildren: Wyatt Scantland of Louisville, Ky., and Roman Beckman of Louisville, Ky.; and a brother Tom Scantland of Clarksville,In.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to a favorite charity of your choosing.
