of Birmingham, passed away Wednesday, Feburary 2, 2005 at the age of 78. He was born in Alton, AL, graduated from Mortimer Jordan H. S. and attended Mississipi State. He played semi-pro baseball for the Red Sox. He was a US Navy veteran where he served as an aviation electrician. Mr. McCombs was the owner of McCombs Ditching Co for many years, and later joined Nichols Contracting for several years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #134. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim W. and Mattie McCombs; a son, Wally; a grandson, Chuckie; and 12 brothers and sisters. He was a kind, hard-working man who loved sports and the outdoors. He will be missed by those who loved him. Mr. McCombs is survived by his wife, Sylviane McCombs of Birmingham; one son, Steve McCombs (Connie) of Dallas, TX; two step-sons, Louis McCormick (Chelsea); John Marc McCormick (Joy) of Atlanta, GA; two step-daughters, Candace Fischer (Jeff) of Austin, TX, and Gigi Copeland (Stan) of Chelsea; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren; many nieces, nephew and cousins. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 4, 2005 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150, Hoover. The funeral service will be on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at l:00 p.m.in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home directing.
