Carolyn Thompson

January 13, 1917 — December 8, 2015

Carolyn V. Thompson’s roots reached into the fertile Kentucky farmland. She grew up as the only daughter in a household of 5 boys near Lewisburg, learning not only to cook, sew, and grow things, but also to reach any goals she set. After she left the farm as a young woman, she created a family and career in Los Angeles and then Birmingham. On Sundays she loved to dress up for church, primarily attending Methodist and Baptist congregations. Her last church home was Canaan Baptist in Bessemer. Carolyn was also a longtime member of Green Valley (now Hoover) Country Club. During her last decade some of her greatest joys were taking exercise classes and making friends at the Hoover Senior Center. Carolyn was a foodie long before the word was ever invented, thrilled by fresh fruits and fish. Her healthy living was legendary, and she delighted in surprising doctors, nurses, and friends with her age and good heath. Carolyn was also an early feminist. She knew that if she wanted something, she had to do it herself, and being a woman never stopped her. She worked in residential real estate in Birmingham beginning in the 1960s, and maintained an active career until she was 90. She also had passions for golf, sewing, the Atlanta Braves, and her beloved University of Alabama teams. Carolyn inspired loving devotion and admiration from her children and grandchildren, who attended her daily during her final months. Much to her surprise she discovered that she did indeed love cats, especially Killer, Booger, and Squeaky. Carolyn was the beloved daughter of Thenia and Charles M. Vaughn, and the 44-year wife of Glenn H. Thompson, all deceased. She was also predeceased by her son Glenn H. Thompson, Jr. Her surviving family includes son Charles V. Thompson, daughter Annette Thompson (husband Michael D. Floyd), grandchildren Ellen Blackburn and Russell N. Blackburn, and many nieces and nephews and cousins. The family would especially like to thank St. Vincent’s Hospice for their kind and tender care. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday December 19 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Hoover. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.
