Mr. Calvin Reid, passed away, Monday, August 26, 2013, at the age of 89. Calvin was the recipient of The Purple Heart for his courageous service in World War II. Calvin was a brick layer by trade and entered the homebuilding profession in 1951. He was President of Calvin Reid Construction, Co., Inc. and was very influential in the Birmingham building industry for over 50 years. He served as President of Birmingham Association of Homebuilders, National Association of Homebuilders Life Director, Spike Director and Builder of the Year. In 1988 he was inducted in Greater Birmingham Association of Homebuilders Hall of Fame and in the State Hall of Fame in 1992. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor Reid, daughter, Diane (Philip) Hughes, son, Dennis (Elaine) Reid, his grandchildren, Michele (Renn) Williams, Melissa (Winston) Bradley, Blake Hughes, and Justin Reid, 2 great grandchildren, Gracie Williams and Natalie Williams. Mr. Reid is predeceased by his mother, Maude Lee Reid, and father, Burt Reid, and seven brothers and sisters. Calvin touched everyone with his loving, kind spirit, his zest for life, and with the ability to make everyone feel special. He never met a stranger. He loved to work and he loved to have fun. He will be missed more than words can express. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 28, 2013, for 5-7 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Services will be Thursday, August 29, 2013, at 11 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Saving Grace Animal Rescue.
