Dr. Bruce W. Atkinson, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018. Born on July 17, 1953, in San Francisco, CA, Bruce attended schools in California, completing a PhD degree in Mathematics at the University of California San Diego in 1980. He completed 40 years dedicated to researching and teaching Mathematics at four different universities culminating in 20 years of dedicated service to his beloved Math Department at Samford University.
Bruce was cherished by his family for his steadfast love and loyalty, the joy he expressed in their presence, his breadth of mathematical knowledge freely shared, his kindness, gentleness and patience in all things, and his quirky sense of humor. His passion for music, especially the Beatles and playing the guitar made him an icon. From pinewood derby cars to skateboard ramps to FAFSA applications his dedication to the growth and nurturance of his family never wavered.
Bruce’s fascination with and passion for numbers, mathematics and for helping his students to successfully understand mathematics powered his intellectual and professional life. During his tenure at Samford as department chair he thoughtfully developed a vibrant and smart faculty community that loved him dearly, a love that was reciprocated.
Bruce leaves behind Becky, his wife of 41 years, four amazing sons, Andrew (Michelle), Nick, (Stef), Scott (Haley), and Mack, two grandchildren, Bailey and Ford, parents Dr. Joseph F. Atkinson, Jr. and Linda Atkinson, two sisters, Susie (Larry), and Heather (David), and two brothers, Joe (Nancy) and Thom (Jen).
His positive expectation that life was full of discovery and promise opened possibilities for all.
