Boyd Hughes

June 8, 1923 — December 20, 2017

Boyd Hughes, of Bessemer, Al. passed away peacefully early on December 20th 2017. Born June 8th 1923 in Lawrenceburg, Tn. Boyd came of age during the Great Depression. He lost his mother at an early age and became essentially independent as a teenager. Boyd joined the CC Program, a depression era effort to employ young men. He was in "Camp" for six months when WWII broke out and many of these same young men enlisted and were sent off to war. Physically unable to serve in the Army, Boyd learned how to weld and spent the duration of the war at the Jacksonville Ship Yard welding the workhorse 'Liberty Ship" as his contribution to the service of his country. After the war, he married Bea and took a welding job with US Steel in Birmingham where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 1979.
Boyd was an avid hunter and fisherman and an acclaimed gardener as many in his neighborhood in Bessemer would attest to. He still found time to practice his other love as a Field Trial dog trainer. Two of the dogs he trained won National Championships in Field Trial Competition.

Boyd was an active member of the Flint Hill Church of Christ. He was the epitome of a Christian husband, father, grandfather and friend. His lively and mischievous sense of humor will be missed by all those whose life he touched. In 2014, Boyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Beatrice “Bea”.

Boyd is survived by his children, Jim Hughes (Rhonda), Janie Blankenship (Buddy), and Janice Tinin; three grandchildren, Kim Brown, Kristie Barnes, and Sammie Lee Stone; and six great-grandchildren.

The family would like to recognize the loving caregivers who looked after Boyd during his last days. Steve, Betty, Beverly, Jeanette and June are special people whom we will never forget. God Bless you all.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 23, 2017, from 12-2 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover. The Service will begin at 2 PM in the Chapel with Alan Harget officiating. Interment will follow the service at Highlands Memorial Gardens in Bessemer.
