of Hoover, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the age of 54. He was a native of North Louisiana and was a resident of Alabama for the past 12 years. He was the head football coach at Bumpus Middle School in Hoover, AL and formerly coached at Oak Park Middle School in Decatur, AL. Mr. Barthel was actively involved in the FCA for a number of years, and was a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church. He was a loving husband and father who was committed to Biblical christian values. He was an avid deer and duck hunter. He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Barthel; and a brother, Bill Barthel, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Debbie Barthel; a son, Cole Barthel; a daughter, Codi Barthel; his mother, Reba B. Barthel of Rayville, LA; a brother, Don Barthel (Mary Allen) of Decatur; two sisters, Judy Griffin (Bud) of Fairhope and Diane Newell (Altus) of Germany; and eight nieces and two nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, from 6-8 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150, Hoover. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at 11 AM at Hunter Street Baptist Church, with Dr. Buddy Gray and Dr. Steve Bateman officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Brown, Cedric Jefferies, Greg Heard, George Barefield, Jeff Haley and Jason Watson. Honorary Pallbearers will be all current and former football players and coaches. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 11 AM in Faith Memorial in Delhi, LA, with Dr. Ernest Winburn officiating. Pallbearers will be D. R. Rawls, Johnny Phillips, Kenny Meeks, David Gay, John Odom and Jim Adams. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hunter Street Baptist Church Missions and Bumpus Middle School Athletic Scholarship.
