Bette was born in Liberal MO, to Carl and Zola Truskett. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her life was one of service and love for her family. Bette loved her church, Mountain Chapel UMC, where she was a long time member. She served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and church hostess for a number of years. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook, and co-owned a catering business for 17 years. Bette was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years, Bob Schaffhausen, sister Margaret Bowman, brother Gene Truskett, and niece Susan Bowman. She is survived by 2 daughters Carol Schaffhausen of Birmingham and Cindy Hastings (Joe) of Oneonta; a brother, David Truskett (Gerri) of Cowgill, MO; 3 grandchildren, Mitchell (Megan), John Carl (Tori) and Meredith Hastings; 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside service for the family on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover. Visitation for family and friends will be from 12:30-2:00 PM at Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church, Vestavia Hills, AL, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church.
