Bernice Matthews

Mrs. Bernice Matthews, of Hoover, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at the age of 89. She was the 10th of 11 children born to Joe W. and Hattie Esther Busby. As a child she joined Rehobeth Baptist Church in Elbert County, GA . After graduating from Bowman High School in Elbert County, GA, she was employed by Nabisco. In 1952, Bernice met Paul J. Matthews, a young marine at Jacksonville Beach, FL. They were married on May 5, 1956 at Cascade Heights Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Paul Matthews; 2 sons, Paul J. Matthews, II (Cindy) and Joe Matthews (Deborah); and 2 granddaughters, Elizabeth and Catherine Matthews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 from 1 to 2 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 2 PM in the funeral home chapel with Dennis Tanner officiating. Entombment will be in the Abbey Mausoleum at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. Floral tributes will be welcomed and greatly appreciated by Bernice's family.
