Bernice Ann Callans, died March 8, 2020, at the age of 91.
Bernice’s answer to most questions over the last few years was “I’m safe in the arms of Jesus”. Even homebound, Bernice watched daily Mass and Lawrence Welk on Saturday night singing and praying along.
One of ten children Bernice returned to college obtaining her AD, RN Degree at 40 years of age. Bernice was employed at St. Vincent’s then recruited as one of the first 2 Medicare Claim Review nurses at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Charles W. Callans and five brothers and sisters. Bernice is survived by three children Cathy Lee (Robert), Madeline Harris, Chuck Callans (Beth), four sisters, Josephine Fawcett, Catherine Jane Willis, Virginia Jones and Providence Hooper. Bernice was very proud of her seven grandchildren and spouses, and adored her sixteen great grandchildren. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, their families, first and second-generation cousins and “chosen“ family as she and Charles travelled throughout the Southeast with grandchildren on sports teams.
The family has decided to reschedule services for a later date and will be announced. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
The Callans Family is especially grateful for their friend and caretaker, Mrs. Carolyn Lassiter. In lieu of flowers the family requests a memorial to UAB School of Nursing, Prince of Peace Catholic Church Prayer Garden or St. Vincent’s Hospital Foundation.
