Barbara Ruth Straynar was called home to the Lord on Thursday January 09, 2025 at the age of 97.
She passed away in her Crestwood home surrounded by family and friends.
She was born Dec. 5, 1927 in McCalla, AL. She lived at the Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega, AL until she eloped in 1945.
She was a fashion model in Birmingham in the 1960's and an active member of The Model Connection through her final years. She collected antiques and loved spending time in her yard creating exquisite gardens full of fountains, bird baths, bird feeders, flowers and countless types of plants that she enjoyed. She was a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church and loved producing floral arrangements for services. Barbara lived every day as an ideal true southern woman by treating others with kindness, dedicating to her time to family, and enthralling everyone with her elegant Southern voice.
Her husband Andy, of 74 years, was the owner of Bogue's Restaurant in Birmingham from 1968 to 2005. Her warmth, leadership, and love will be missed by many.
She is preceded in death by her husband Andy Straynar, sisters Sara Strong, Evelyn Labue, and brother Ted Dean. She is survived by her children Barbara J. Straynar, Stacey Straynar Falkner, and Greg Straynar; 4 grandchildren: Christopher and Aaron Straynar, Maxwell Falkner and Evelyn Falkner Frye; 5 great grandchildren: Bryce and Kye Straynar; Sophia Jalil, Annabelle Nelson, and Andrew Falkner.
The family will receive friends on Jan 20, 2025 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover. A service will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.
