Barbara Owings Sanders passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017, after struggling almost three years to overcome strokes and seizures. She demonstrated every day what it means to run the good race and fight the good fight.
On January 21, 1955, Barbara married Fred V. Sanders after meeting him at First Baptist Church, Childersburg. They were married for 62 years and 6 months. She retired after almost three decades of shaping young lives, mostly as an American History teacher at Shades Valley High School. She also devoted most of her adult life to helping others understand and apply the timeless principles of the Bible. She led a ministry at Lakeside Baptist Church that supported missions - demonstrating the love of Jesus to people around the world who desperately need that love in their lives. Barbara and her husband Fred went way beyond just talking about God's love; they went to other states and countries. They worked and gave and did whatever they could to show people how Jesus would love them if He were still here physically, because in people like Barbara and Fred, He is.
Barbara is survived by her children, Alan D. Sanders & Penny Sanders Grimes (Dr. Jeffery R. Grimes); her grandchildren, Dr. Jessica Grimes, Kelley White (Walter), Jeremy Grimes, Joshua Grimes (Allie), Jason Grimes, Diamond Sanders Jordan (Shawn), Molley Sanders, Jonathan Grimes & Jillian Grimes; great-grandchildren, Summer White, Brooke White, Madelyn Jordan, James Jordan & Ryker White; her siblings, Johnnie Sue Owings Russell & Phillip Owings; and many friends from Lakeside Baptist Church in Birmingham.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, from 1-2 PM at Lakeside Baptist Church with the service to follow at 2 PM. Interment will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover.
