Barbara Blackwood

Barbara Jean Norris Blackwood went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 19, 2014. Barbara was born on October 23, 1932 in Ft. Payne, Alabama as the youngest of 3 children. Her father passed away when she was 7 and the family moved to Chattanooga. She was an excellent student and upon her graduation received the Balfour Award as the top student in the largest high school in Tennessee. Barbara attended Carson-Newman College and, after marrying in 1957 and having 2 sons, she returned to college and obtained an undergraduate degree in English and master’s degrees in English, Education, and Special Education from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Barbara taught students with learning disabilities at Gresham Middle School for 20 years until her retirement in 1993. She was an actress and appeared in numerous local productions and was a member of Seasoned Performers for many years after her retirement from teaching. Barbara played the violin, loved to travel, read and spend time with her family and friends and was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church since 1963. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, and was a brave and strong woman who raised 2 teenage sons after her husband’s death. She will be missed.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hubert Norris, Sr., her brother and sister, Floyd Hubert Norris, Jr. and Frances Norris, and her husband, Francis LeRoy Blackwood, and is survived by her sons, Brett Norris Blackwood (Wendy) and Martin Lee Blackwood, and her grandsons, John Martin Blackwood, Michael Lee Blackwood, Samuel Turner Blackwood, Daniel Allen Blackwood and Barrett Joseph Blackwood.

A memorial service will be held at Lakeside Baptist Church at 2865 Old Rocky Ridge Road on Saturday, February 22 at 3 pm. The family will receive visitors from 2-3 pm at the church prior to the start of the service.
