Mr. Allen Thomas Arthur, Jr., passed away peacefully on May 15, 2013 in Birmingham, Alabama. Allen Arthur was born in San Francisco on April 6, 1945, the son of a career naval aviator, he and his younger brother Eugene grew up near Midland City, Ala. He received a degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University in 1966 and lived and worked in the Birmingham area for more than forty years. Mr. Arthur was a licensed professional engineer in the State of Alabama who served as North American Sales Manager for FLSmidth headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Holly Moor Smith, three children; Allen T. Arthur III "Tommy" and his wife Jenny of Madison, Ga; Bryan Smith (Tara) of Odenville, Ala. and Ashley Smith Hooie (Jeremy) of Helena, Ala.; and by nine beloved grandchildren: Anna Arthur, Tommy Arthur, Audrey Smith, Parker Smith, Abby Hooie, Kate Hooie, Cooper Hooie, Landon Griffin, and Peyton Griffin. He is also survived by his friend and mother-in-law, Gladys O. Moor of Birmingham, Ala. and many other family and friends. Mr. Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, Allen Thomas Arthur and Anna Arthur as well as by his brother, Eugene Arthur. His family and friends note the extraordinary steadiness, courage and selflessness that Mr. Arthur displayed throughout his life and, in particular, during his final days. Mr. Arthur played a central role in caring for, providing for and nurturing a large and blended family across four generations. His accomplishments and quiet strength as a son, son-in-law, husband, father, grandfather and professional are manifest in the lives he touched and will be felt through the generations of his family to come. His family wrote: "We were blessed to have had him and his love in our lives. Happily, we add our voices to the "well done." We celebrate his arrival home to heaven." In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care. The family of Mr. Arthur wishes to thank the staff and professionals of the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. and, especially, the members of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care who provided care and comfort to Mr. Arthur in his final days.
